João Pedro Almeida Lucas
João Pedro Almeida Lucas (Covilhã, Portugal), began his double bass studies in 2006 with Romeu Santos at EPABI (Professional Music School of Beira Interior), Covilhã, Portugal.
In 2011, João was invited by Quirijn van Regteren Altena to become his student at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, where in 2015 he concluded his bachelor degree.
During his studies, João participated in masterclasses with Gary Karr (world leading soloist), at KarrKamp in 2013, Canada; Manuel Rêgo (Teacher at Lisbon Music Unversity); João Panta Nunes (Gary Karr’s student); Matthew MacDonald (Principal Bass Player of the Berliner Philhamorniker); Nicholas Walker; Robert Black from “Bang On A Can All Stars”; Paulo Alvares (Köln Musilkhochschule).
João is an active orchestra player. Until this moment he joined in projects with: Orchestra of Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, conducted by Martin André (Portugal); Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Pedro Carneiro (Portugal); International Music Week Orchestra (Luxembourg), conducted by Jean Phillipe Till; Orquestra Clássica da Beira Interior (Portugal), conducted by Luís Cipriano; Residentie BachOrkest, conducted by Jos Vermunt; Nederlandse Orkest- en Ensemble-Academie (NJO); conducted by Martin Sieghart; UvA-Orkest, conducted by Libia Hernández; Residentie Orkest, conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw; Royal Conservatory Orchestra, conductors Etienne Siebens, Jac van Steen, Kenneth Montgomery, Anthony Zielhorst and Alexei Ogrintchouk.
With ensembles, João performed with ASKO Schoenberg Ensemble, conducted by Etienne Siebens, “Im wunderschönen Monat Mai”, conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw and a Chamber Opera “O doido e a morte” by the Portuguese composer Alexandre Delgado, conducted by Fernando Fontes. João also performed as a guest musician with the Rietveld Ensemble and “Out of cool Duo”.
At the moment, João is a master student at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, under the guidance of Quirijn van Regteren Altena. Alongside his academic life, he is a member of Ciconia Consort Orkest , a string orchestra in The Hague; Salad Ensemble, improvised music project, in Portugal; Off Road Trio, and unusual formation for voice, double bass and piano, founded in 2015.
